DIY PDA in California – Worth the Time?
Has anyone here gone the DIY route and made their own Potato Dextrose Agar in California?
I’ve been thinking about giving it a try—mainly because the pre-made stuff is getting expensive and sometimes takes too long to arrive. I’ve seen some tutorials using potatoes, dextrose, and agar powder, and it doesn’t look too complicated. But I’m wondering if the results are good enough for reliable fungal cultures.
I live in California’s Central Coast area, so humidity isn’t too bad, but temperatures fluctuate a lot. Does anyone know if that affects homemade PDA more than the commercial stuff?
Would appreciate hearing from people who’ve tried this, whether for hobbyist mycology or even academic use. Is it consistent? Does it hold up to storage? Or is it just more trouble than it’s worth?
Not expecting lab-grade performance—just something reliable enough for baseline growth experiments.
